Is it Cuil to search?
A new search engine launched this week which claimed to be a challenger to Google. Cuil (pronounced Cool) was developed by former Google search experts. It claims to combine the biggest Web index with content-based relevance methods, results organized by ideas, and complete user privacy.
The launch was not without its problems, however (Cuil is down, How not to launch a search engine) and came up with a variety of weird and even bizarre results in some tests. For instance, early reviewers found a search for “Cuil” didn’t even bring up a link to itself on the first page of results.
Some people were prepared to give Cuil a try (Matt Mullenweg) but most reviewers seemed to find problems (Time on why Cuil is no threat to Google).
Almost immediately came Yuil a Yahoo-based mashup which some believe works better than the over-hyped Cuil.
I guess we need to wait and see. Let's just say I won't be using it yet! With Reach Further not turning up at all in a search for "reach further" on Cuil (whereas it's number 1 on Google) and after looking at the results that do come up I feel it is both US-centric and plain bad!
