Open Source gets the Government seal of approval

The UK Government today backed the Open Source movement launching its Open Source, Open Standards and Re-Use Government Action Plan. Calling the Open Source movement "one of the most significant cultural developments in IT and beyond over the last two decades" it celebrates the achievements of the groups of ndividuals who collaborate over the Internet to create products that are as good as, and often better than those that cost very much more from big companies. Companies, organisations and even the public sector can become "more innovative, more agile and more cost-effective" by exploiting and contributing to these community-generated initiatives. It has led to Open Standards movements which have pioneered new ways of thinking about copyright, intellectual property rights and the availability of information for re–use by others. As a company that has advocated open source and collaboration from our founding, Reach Further support the open source (OSS or FLOSS) community, and we use and recommend open source products, such as Moodle, Wordpress, Drupal, Open Office, Sugar CRM and others. Having run an open source

Having run an open source software company for a number of years, it is refreshing to hear that the government is eventually backing the movement.

Over the past 5 years open source has grown in credibility and popularity. Especially as Google has used open source as their platform to run all the search engine and associated appliactions on. It's about time that open source was seen as a real alternative to Microsoft.
