Top 10 Twitter Tips for Engagement - Tip #10 – Be helpful to your community

The Twitter community is a helpful one which you can contribute to. If your tweets are solely sales and marketing broadcast messages, you are unlikely to get noticed. You need to engage with other users on Twitter and tailor your tweets and responses to other people’s tweets. You need to think about your audience on Twitter. What content will be useful and interesting to them that I can share? What useful knowledge/insights can I offer on this subject that may help someone?

By making helpful and useful contributions to questions or discussions users are having, it is more likely that you will be valued and remembered when they come across someone who needs your help.

Top 10 Twitter Tips for Engagement - Tip #9 Pick up on breaking news: Don’t just retweet - add your perspective

If you tweet about a subject that is being talked about on Twitter it is more likely to get noticed. Add your voice to the debate and use a relevant hashtag that people are using for the news item to get it noticed. What perspective can you add? Does it link to another area of interest or debate? Contribute your thoughts and ideas so that people will see you have an opinion. Users on Twitter want commentary as well as news.

If you want to retweet use a manual re-tweet and add your comment. If you just retweet the tweet no one will know what you think about it and you may just be seen as an amplifier of content people may already be likely to know about.

Top 10 Twitter Tips for Engagement - Tip #8 Think about how your tweet will make people feel

You need to have a reason to tweet. Every time you send a tweet think about what people will get from the information you are tweeting. There is so much noise on Twitter and so many users to follow; you need to think about how to make your tweets stand out and how they will affect the people reading them.

What do you want them to do, think or feel when reading your tweet. Do you want them to consider a different point of view, follow a link, re-tweet your tweet? It must have a purpose to trigger a reaction.
