Free Training Courses for Social Media in Business and more!

A while ago Reach Further were commissioned by nti Leeds to create two courses for the Digital 20/20 program run by Yorkshire Forward.

We produced a one day course:

Social Networking for Business Benefit
  • an overview of the variety of free tools that are available
  • how to adopt key tools quickly and effectively
  • security, compliance and measuring return on investment

And another:

 Remote & Flexible Working

  • in partnership with Flexworks-UK
  • understanding the benefits of remote & flexible working
  • factors to consider in adopting these new working practices
  • how to develop your own organisation's strategy

These course are under a creative commons license that allows you to download the materials FREE OF CHARGE and use them in your organisation.  The license precludes you selling the content or running the courses for profit.

We'll be running them ourselves, of course!

Creating a short URL for Twitter and other social media uses

We're often asked by our trainees and clients how to make a long web address into one of those very short ones that are easier to post on Twitter - or any other socal networking website that has  limitations on the number of characters.  Often the URL or web address of a web page is too long to fit into the 140 characters of a Twitter post (tweet).

There are a variety of services that provide this function. One, tr.im, recently described the problems it faces in providing this service.  bit.ly is the service that Twitter.com prefers, and if you use an add-in such as PowerTwitter, it may autmatically shorten your URL for you.

Here's an example: a YouTube URL isn't particularly long but can still be more than you'd like, i.e., http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIBh1Bvv90c (42 characters)

is longer than

http://tinyurl.com/dzs6g5 (25 characters)

In this case we'll use the tinyURL website:

1. Copy your long URL, e.g., from the URL box next to a Youtube video

2. Go to tinyurl.com and paste your URL into the box as below:

3. Click "Make TinyURL"
and your shorter URL will be generated as below

HiMyTribe social locator iPhone App

HiMyTribe is a new iPhone App that aims to counter the loneliness people may feel in a big city. It allows you to find nearby people who share your interests and alerts you to connect you.   Created by French social networking developer Never Alone Anymore , the app uses GPS technology linked with social networking to form “tribes” of like-minded individuals for social or business connections. The user sets up their own “tribes” or groups of people with similar interests that they want to meet or stay in contact with. For someone who's moved to a new city, perhaps, it might be a way to find others interested in skydiving or Thai food. The app will do a quick search of other HiMyTribe members with those interests in your town or city, and alerts you so you can invite them to join your tribe. If they accept, you can find their location via GPS.
